PRAHA – ABOUT THE CAPITAL CITY

Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, was founded in the 9th century AD. Its foundation and glory, which it deserves, was prophesied to Prague by Princess Libuše, who had the gift of foresight. Libuše in her prophetic vision said that she saw a great city, golden-domed, glory of which would go sky-high. And it was the truth … Prague from the earliest times has been called the Mother of Cities, the City of Hundred Spires, Golden Prague, the Head of the Czech Kingdom and many other beautiful names. Famous people, who knew Prague well awarded it with glorious epithets. For example, Pope Eneas Sylvius called it the Pearl of Cities. Goethe said about Prague that it is the most precious stone in the crown of cities, and the French critic William Reuter even wrote that on the whole earth there is no other such an open book of the most excellent history and architecture which Prague is. Some of the epithets Prague received due to its location on the European continent. So Prague is called the heart of Europe, since it lies equally far from the three great European seas.

Prague is one of the most picturesque, most visited and one of the safest cities in the world, with an average of over 100,000 tourists visiting every day. The city lies on both banks of the Vltava River, in the Central Bohemian Basin on an area of about 500 square kilometers, with a population of almost 1.3 million people and is the largest city in the Czech Republic.

Prague is the political, industrial, cultural, educational and scientific center of the country. Here are the highest legislative, administrative and political bodies. Besides, it is an economically highly developed region with a high standard of living, which exceeds not only other Czech standards, but also some European ones. According to European Union statistics, the Czech Republic is in ninth place in Europe in terms of living standards. GDP per capita in Prague reaches 171% of the EU average (GDP per capita in the Czech Republic reaches only 80%).

The nowadays appearance and position of Prague was preceded by long eleven centuries. From the moment of its establishment in the early Middle Ages, it has always been the center of secular and ecclesiastical authority, as well as the residence of the ruling Czech princes, kings, and also presidents at a later time. Old Prague is a medieval city in a baroque raincoat, decorated with modern art. There is nothing surprising when the Gothic walls and dungeons in the Romanesque style are hidden under the baroque facade.

The historic center of the city with a unique panorama of Prague Castle and Hradčany since 1992 has become a UNESCO monument. The ancient monuments located here are really the most attractive magnet for tourists. There are more than 120 of such cultural and historical buildings, monuments in the centre, and more than 3 thousand all over Prague! Do not miss the opportunity to take the tour to the Prague Castle, which is the largest castle-and-fortress complex in the world, including the fortress with the royal castle, the Cathedral of St. Vitus, historic castle parks and other buildings, which are perceived as a unique outstanding treasury and gallery, illustrating the development of Czech history. If you want to learn as much as possible about the cultural heritage of Prague, take a walk down the Royal Route, on which the coronation processions of Czech kings and queens paraded the streets to the St. Vitus Cathedral for centuries. Taking the same road you will reach the Old Town Square with the famous chiming clock, or to the Powder Gate and the Municipal House, from where the Royal Route used to start from. Labyrinth of medieval streets of the Old Town will lead you to the Charles Bridge, decorated on both sides with beautiful medieval towers. The Old Town Bridge Tower is considered the most beautiful gothic gate in Europe. You can walk along the Charles Bridge to the romantic peninsula on the Kampa River or, continuing on your way, go to the Malostranské Square, with the charming baroque church of Sts. Nicholas. Along Nerudova Street go up to the terrace in front of Prague Castle, where the magical view of the city of Prague, which lies at your feet, opens before you.

From times immemorial, cruises on Vltava river are among the unforgettable moments of traveling to Prague, there is also a funicular ride up the Petřín Hill, to the observation tower, called by Praguers the Prague Eiffel Tower. Walks around the Jewish quarter will also bring you indelible impressions. In Prague you can find the highest viewing deck in the Czech Republic – located on a 216-meter television tower, offering a fantastic view of Prague. If you are bored with enjoying art in the museums of the city – you can go to the Prague Zoo, by the way one of the most famous in Europe. Near the zoo there is a botanical garden with a modern huge greenhouse Fata Morgana.

Prague is also rich in its cultural life. There are many theaters here, among which shines the National Theater, opened in 1881 and the National Opera, built in 1888, and a lot of concert halls, including the famous Rudolfinum, music and drama festivals are often held in the city, such as the Prague Spring or Summer Shakespeare Nights. You can also visit dozens of galleries and museums, including the People’s Museum or the People’s Gallery of the city of Prague, with works of both Czech and world famous artists and sculptors.
